‘You’re Fundamentally Wrong’: Rachel Maddow and Rick Santorum Face Off

Rick Santorum sat down with Rachel Maddow on MSNBC tonight and they went from light chatting about Fox’s debate rules to strongly arguing over the Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling. Both of them gave each other compliments in the first segment. Maddow credited Santorum as a good Republican communicator, and Santorum credited Maddow for always keeping her criticisms on policy and never indulging in personal attacks. But in the second segment, they really got into it over the gay marriage ruling that Santorum previously said Congress could overturn. They argued back and forth about whether Congress has that authority, and Maddow told him, “You’re fundamentally wrong on civics.” Things got a bit awkward when Maddow asked Santorum if people choose to be gay. Santorum said he doesn’t know, and reiterated his long-held belief that gay marriage “leads to a whole bunch of other situations.” That brought Maddow to Santorum’s infamous comments about bestiality. She confronted him about that, but Santorum insisted she was not quite getting the right context. At the same time, he admitted, “I wish I hadn’t said it.”
