Police officer Jason Gates was patrolling the area around Kalamazoo in Michigan on Saturday, when he signalled for a car to pull over for a red light violation.
As he approached the vehicle, he noticed that the driver was choking behind the wheel. At first, he tried to pat the woman on the back, but as she continued coughing and spluttering he realised more serious measures would be needed to save her. Ordering her to get out of the car, he performed the Heimlich manoeuvre three times, which finally dislodged food stuck in the driver’s throat.
Overwhelmed by the incident, the woman hugged Officer Gates and thanked him for his quick thinking.
