Alison Spann is the daughter of Michael Spann, the first American killed in Afghanistan. In 2001, her father Michael was working for the C.I.A. at the Qala-i-Jengi compound interrogating the most high-risk members of the Taliban. When he started to take photographs of the prisoners, he put himself in harm’s way, not realizing that there were actually more detainees in the prison than guards. Several of the captives were thought to have surrendered their weapons, but happened to be hiding them under their clothes. Then, one day as Michael was questioning them about why they joined the Taliban, he was overpowered by their numbers and literally crushed to death. Among the leadership at the compound was recently released Guantanamo Bay detainee, Mohammad Fazi.
