College Students Learn Common Core Math

College students and others at George Mason University were dumbstruck by the tedious nature of an elementary level Common Core problem during a short series of interviews conducted by Campus Reform last week. The problem, 32-12, was demonstrated to those on campus the traditional way and juxtaposed with the Common Core method.

Common Core is totally freeking stupid, just like this freeking Goverment. Education should be taken out of the hands of the Govrnment and put into the hands of competent educators. This Government couldn’t find its butt with both hands and a flashlight, well maybe Michell could but hers is eaiser to find than most.

I’ll agree except to the “competent educators.”
Schools should be put back in the hands of first, parents, and second, the community served by the school.
It is up to individual teachers to prove to parents first and the community next that they are competent, and can also be entrusted with the temporary care of our children.
We must never forget that children belong to and are the responsibility of parents, and this includes their education.
A community provides schools to aid parents in their task because that is in the best interest of everyone. We do not create these institutions to provide a means for others to gain control of our children. Whether that control wears the guise of education or any other thing.

LET’S SEE;; i WAS TOO STUPID TO LEARN THE MULTIPLICATION TABLES, so my teacher told me to go home and get 18 bowls and 90 beans and put one bean in each bowl until I run out, then count how many beans were in {1} bowl, that would tell me how many beans each person would get;; actual story;; how freaking dumb are these kids. oh, I forgot, the blacks use their left brain NOT their right.

    • Briana

In well excuse me what you said about black people is not true. I have all A’s and B’s in school. We actually made history a black student made it into all the ivy league schools. Harvard Yale etc. And you call us stupid. You nothing but a freaking racist! I think you need to educate yourself before making ignorant comments!

  • regulus30

thanks to the teachers unions and Bill “the terrorist” Ayers;; kids no longer are taught multiplication, fractions and decimal placement; and some wonder why these poor skulls full of mush rank 93 in the world in science and math. I can tell you one thing, a 12 year old black knows what an ounce of pot is or a rock of crack looks like.

  • Mark

It’s no wonder kids can’t learn anything.

  • Mathematical certainty

These are the same bureaucratic morons who run the “Schools of Education”. Until the “Schools of Education” are abolished and the mediocre students that they torpedo-out annually to indoctrinate your kids in the class rooms, are removed, nothing will change.
Fact: degrees in education are meaningless, irrelevant, and embarrassing for anyone with the ability to discern superficiality with reality. I taught Mathematics and Physics teachers with education degrees and teachers drawn from industry who held Mathematics and Physics non-education degrees (I.E., REAL DEGREES). The in depth knowledge of the subject matter from the latter group far exceeded the former group in all categories. Until the so-called “Schools of Education” are history and those who choose to teach, work towards achieving a “REAL DEGREE” in their respective fields the dumbing down of our future generations will continue.

Note: If you think Common Core Math is hilarious, by the way, (developed by those with education degrees), a recent poll revealed that 25% of those polled, (data on the sample population polled, unknown) believe the Sun revolves around the Earth. I wonder what the % will be in a decade? I also wonder how 1+1 will be calculated in a decade? My greatest fear is that Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Disciplines, Medicine, and all of the Physical Sciences will be reduced to the Neanderthal levels of society.

Obama bio read by fourth-graders suggests whites are racist, details president’s past drug use. A biography of President Obama being studied by at least one fourth-grade class has received criticism for glossing over negative aspects of the president, painting white voters as likely racists and highlighting the commander-in-chief’s early identity struggles by focusing on his teenage drug use.

Critics also say the new Obama book is biased, pointing to a passage that reads, “but some people said Americans weren’t ready for that much change. Sure Barack was a nice fellow, they said. But white voters would never vote for a black president.”

The book, “Barack Obama,” was published by Lerner Publishing in 2010 as part of their series “History Maker Bios.” All presidents going back to Richard Nixon — except George W. Bush — were the subjects of similar biographies published by Lerner, which did not respond to questions from

This is how you dumb down Amerixa by making it impossible to understand what is simple math!

You see people, it’s not the teachers or the schools, the little f##kers are just dumb!

I’m ashamed to admit, but freely will due to the pseudo-anonymous nature of the internet that I actually do math in my head like this and I came up with it on my own. Once you get an appreciation for how numbers work this stuff makes sense, but if your mind is a mathematical blank slate then it would be absurd to do math like this. Thankfully this bad teaching technique was not stylish when I was in school (I used the Saxon books that most teachers hated because they actually required students learn something). This is as bad as teaching foreign languages in the so-called Total Immersion Method (which I unfortunately had to suffer through and learned nothing).

  • savetheusa2

This is the most useless crap I ever SAW! If I had to learn this, I would still be taking this class for the next two years. It is there to FRY your brain! I believe that even if you came up with the wrong answer (and supposedly there could be more than one!?), as long as you could tell them how you figured it out it would be correct. THIS IS TRASH!
The federal government should get out of education PERIOD. If I had a child, they would be home-schooled. Next, you know they are going to stop people from home-schooling because they want to be sure that ALL of our children are LEMMINGS – lined up to go over the cliff. I’m surprised Bill Ayer’s doesn’t have these kids bill bombs!

CC doesn’t include methods for teaching, just standards like this second grade one: 2.OA.2. Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By
end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. This video shows what happens when misinformed people have a camera and a blog. That said, if people watching the video looked past the simplicity of the numbers involved and applied them to larger numbers, they would see many “shortcuts” people commonly use–rounding, estimating, and finalizing answers. On the plus side, nobody here is in charge of teaching. Thank God for something.

In New Hampshire, we have something called the Virtual Learning Academy Charter School ( which is a free online alternative to the local union schools. We are using VLACS for math and science. Though neither me nor my wife are professional educators, we are doing a better job than the union teachers. We use the union schools for the classes that don’t matter (phys ed, music, and spanish) and for the classes we can oversee from home (history, english).

It’s not hard at all. You are just adding up with easy numbers the difference between 12 and 32. The difference between these two methods is that you have spent years doing the traditional method and less than 30 seconds on the new way. It takes children MONTHS to become confident with traditional subtraction. You have to teach it over and over and correct mistakes. It’s wildly unfair to judge one method as confusing and hard when you have never actually been taught it while another method as easy when you have been using it for upwards of 15 years. Take a whole week to practice it with someone actually teaching and showing you and then MAYBE you can make a fair judgment.
