Bruce Jenner Says He Used To Oppose Gay Marriage: “I’m A Traditionalist”

In an interview set to air next Tuesday, Bruce Caitlyn Jenner has admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that before he transitioned, he once opposed basic LGBT rights. The former Olympian-turned-reality star, who considers herself a Republican, said that 15 or 20 years ago he was not on board with same-sex marriage. “I’m a traditionalist,” he said. “I’m older than most people in the audience, you know. I mean, I kind of like tradition and it’s always been a man and a woman.” “But as time has gone on,” Jenner continued, “I think, like a lot of people on this issue, I’ve really changed [my] thinking here to, ‘I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.’ You know? That’s not my job. OK? If that word ‘marriage’ is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.” DeGeneres seemed surprised that her guest is still hesitant to fully embrace this issue, explaining to him, “Obviously ‘marriage’ is an important word because marriage is marriage and equality is equality, so we want the same word everyone else has.”
