William Kyle Carpenter deliberately threw himself onto a grenade in Afghanistan to save his friend Lance Cpl. Nicholas Eufrazio. Carpenter’s right arm was broken in 30 places and he suffered extensive shrapnel injuries to his face and body — including the loss of his right eye.
