There is no reason that I can think of that could convince me of the correctness of the school’s right OR “rightness” in their attitudes or their actions. That they were heavy-handed enough to take forcibly a symbol of prayer and hope for the sake of all humankind is a sign of Satan at work. That the school committed what amounts, in my mind to a satanic act is an absolute. And I think that many other people, Catholic or not will feel this way as well. And whether or not it was actually a “satanic act” is moot; because what I THINK OF THIS is what is important to me. Not what someone else thinks of it. And I believe that in this Nation, under God we do have religious tolerance for ALL the People, and not just at the whim of a school. In my day, I would have stood up to the school administration and gone eyeball to eyeball with them, and I never would have given them the Rosary. Nor would they have been able to take it. I would have fought them physically about it. Neither, in my day, would any school have been stupid enough to try to take a Rosary away from any student. Why now? Because of “Gang Affiliation”? This happened in my neck of the woods. Read about it in the local paper this morning. What the video doesn’t mention is that when first asked about the rosary the student gave no clear answer as to why he had them. The mention of “for religious purposes” only came up after the mother, claiming her boy is “a good boy” wears them to “honor a dead uncle who was murdered in Los Angeles.” The video also doesn’t mention that the school district has regular meetings with the local law enforcement’s gang task force. The task force determined that the rosary is indeed a gang affiliation sign, due to the number, 13, of beads on the rosary. Since when have the stations of the cross been 13? This isn’t a case of religious persecution. It is a case of gang bangers usurping religious symbolism and one being caught displaying his gang affiliation and claiming, falsely, religious persecution. The same school district has also had to ban team jerseys with certain numbers, again, thanks to gangbangers. In this case your ire would be better directed at the gang culture and not the leftist academia. In the case of keeping gang bangers out of the schools, I hate to say it, the leftists are right.

I have heard of, and used to teach in a school district that experienced occurrences similar to what you have described here, although nobody was ever so bold as to confiscate Rosary beads.

Actually, around here, the leftists seem to want the gang-bangers, along with other highly-disruptive populations in our schools. It’s the average teachers (including, believe it or not, those who are quite liberal by any measure,) and the kids and parents who fight it. I only hope we’ll win and these problems will be removed to alternative schools or some type of residential/pentitentary-type facility and let school return to being school.

  The area this happened in is fairly conservative but close to a viper’s nest of liberal loonism. It doesn’t have a gang problem, thanks to law enforcement, but they can’t be everywhere all the time. The surrounding liberal areas have HUGE gang problems. The schools there don’t enforce dress codes. I sincerly doubt this kid is innocent. The video, and today’s paper mention, the school said he could keep them if he kept them under his shirt. He refused. Now he’s on LE’s radar, if he’s a gang banger, which I believe he is, when he screws up they’ll nail him. I can’t figure out what you’re talking about. The rosary the kid was wearing in the video was a standard one, with 60 beads on it — not 13. And what do the Stations of the Cross (there are 14 of them) have to do with the Rosary? They are quite separate devotions.

If the school is smart they’ll hand them over to LE. Yes, 14, not 13. The confistcated rosaries have groupings of 13 beads, not 14, as every rosary I’ve ever owned. Its time that the people take those who try to illegally control the rights of others to court and punish them in a way that the deserve to be punished. A Rosary was NEVER worn around one’s neck; or, anywhere else for that matter…ever! The only people who wore a Rosary on their person were the Nuns, who wore a large Rosary around their waists. However, it was very common for Catholics to wear a Crucifix, or a St. Christopher medal on a chain necklace. I believe this ‘Rosary’ wearing around the neck ‘thang’ is nothing more than some type of ‘Fad’ being displayed by our ‘current generation’ of kids (Catholic/Non-Catholic, or Gang-Member), attempting to have some sort of ‘unique’ way of identifying whatever they are attempting to communicate. Trust me, Roman-Catholics would never consider wearing a Rosary around their neck; and, are laughing (and, disgusted) about this new ‘Fashion’ statement! After all, Catholics do not want to be ‘confused with’….a Kardashian! LOL….

This is a tough one. I am Catholic and never in my 63 years have I heard of wearing a rosary around my neck. I believe that is what a scapeler was to be used for however the Catholic Church says it is now acceptable to wear it around you neck. I believe this is something more or less brought about by the Latino community. That being said the rosary in part has 10 beads between each link but now these individuals are wearing them with 13 beads which doesn’t represent a true rosary and the number 13 is representative of gang affiliation henceforth the problem. However, if they took them after he refused to ‘remove’ them, then I think he has a case. If kids in our schools were not so violent, and if they had learned to respect the faith of others, these issues would never come up. His open display of faith is commendable in my opinion, but, I’m a Catholic.

This student has had their consitutional rights violated in three ways. He has the right to freely exercise his religion, which includes wearing his rosary. Denying this violates is right to freedom of religion(1st Amendment). His free speech rights were violated by not allowing him to wear his rosary (1st Amendment).
